Smaller flats, smaller families

The Straits Times today reported on the trend of smaller flats in Singapore.  However, as family sizes are also shrinking, the result is most families “enjoy” the same amount of living space as before.  Do you agree?

HDB’s CEO Cheong Koon Hean was quoted as saying “If residents use good interior design and arrange their furniture to create better storage options and a feeling of space, smaller flats do not have to mean a lower quality of living.”

Certainly small apartments are the norm in cosmopolitan hubs like Tokyo and New York.  Shoe box apartments have also been mushrooming in Singapore.

Lock+Store recently expanded its facility at Tanjong Pagar DistriPark to accommodate the increase in demand for self-storage units by small apartment dwellers.
